The oldest known corn, or maize, was domesticated from a wild grass called teosinte in southern Mexico around 9,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence suggests that ancient varieties of corn were already being cultivated by indigenous peoples in the region by about 7,000 to 9,000 years ago. The oldest physical corn cobs discovered are about 5,000 years old, found in the Tehuacán Valley of Mexico.
