There are actually only two recognized species of alligators. These are the American alligator (*Alligator mississippiensis*), found primarily in the southeastern United States, and the Chinese alligator (*Alligator sinensis*), which is native to the Yangtze River basin in China. Although sometimes confused with crocodiles, alligators are a distinct group within the family Alligatoridae.
